The gloves are off in the ancient Art of Eight Limbs
BANGKOK, THAILAND – Mongkol Thai Boxing, one of the world’s most respected fight sports brands, has announced the launch of the world’s first bareknuckle muay Thai promotion, with its debut event emanating from Bangkok on December 16.
This sensational pilot, in association with South East Asia Fighting Championship (SEA FC) will crown the inaugural MWC (Mongkol World Championship) king, as Italian veteran Super Vico (12 wins, 4 losses in muay Thai) will collide with 7-2 American Jesse Morgan for the welterweight belt.
Muay Thai is one of the oldest martial arts, steeped in history and legend and forming an integral part of Thai culture. It allows for punches, kicks, knees and elbows, hence its nickname “The Art of Eight Limbs”, making its exponents as versatile as they are dangerous, and its contest among the most exciting of all combat sports.
Historic tradition meets a modern phenomenon
Now, both the danger and the excitement are set to elevate as the gloves come off and the pioneering athletes of MWC make history inside the spectacular World Siam Stadium in Bangkok.
The popularity of bareknuckle fight sports has surged in recent years, from the astonishing rise of BKFC and its increasing number of competitors, to the growing fan base of leth wei (Burmese boxing) – but now, with ancient tradition meeting a modern phenomenon, bare knuckle muay Thai could become the most can’t-miss martial arts showcase of them all.
MWC is the brainchild of Mongkol Thai Boxing owner and director Khun Tee, who has a goal to expand muay Thai’s fan base further by ushering in a new era of entertainment.
He is working alongside SEA FC, an established player in the region’s live sporting events scene with a five-year history of fight promotions, media production and athlete management.
Undercard highlights
MWC Bare Knuckle Muay Thai also promises a stacked undercard of action featuring contests across the board of fight sports, from more bare knuckle action through to traditional muay Thai, MMA and boxing
A mix of veterans and prospects will compete beneath the main event, with all eyes likely to be drawn to the appearances of Thai legends Baki “No Mercy” Janphirom and Duangdawnoi Looksaikongdin. Baki is a 400-fight veteran who has held Lumpini and leth wei championships, while Duangdawnoi [pictured] is a 24-year-old phenom who has already racked up 75 bouts and a formidable reputation.
And the next generation will be showcased as Irish teenager Toby McNerlin meets fast-rising German Behrang Tayafeh for the inaugural MWC amateur bantamweight title.
More unmissable contests will be added to this pioneering card in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
